One Run. One Nation. One Cause

We’ve seen them as damsels in distress, superheroes and even ‘the other women.’  They are greatly admired, followed and looked-up to.  Their celebrity statuses may always set these two aside from the most of us but last February 10, 2013, Anne Curtis and Angel Locsin stepped out of the shadows of all the roles they’re trying to portray in order to promote one great cause- that is, to save lives.

Following the success of last year’s MVR (Million Volunteer Run), the Philippine Red Cross once again awoken the spirit of volunteerism in us through its 2nd Million Volunteer Run.  Held simultaneously in Metro Manila and the other 143 chapters all over the country, the Million Volunteer Run attracted almost seven hundred thousand participants making it a phenomenon.

Last Sunday, I chose to be a part of the said advocacy.  Although I had to set my nurse’s uniform aside and left my station for this event, it was clearly worth it because I really had fun with the rest of the Philippine Red Cross- Mindoro Oriental Chapter Volunteers.

MVR started by 6 a.m. last Sunday, February 10, 2013 with almost 3, 200 participants in our chapter.  I and my fellow Red Cross volunteers were dispersed in four first aid stations.  I was a part of Station 4- the last and final station.  I was with the other volunteers- Gladys, Rosalie and Jhomar.  We were tasked to watch out for the participants and provide stabs- the proof that they reached the last leg of the run.

It was really fulfilling seeing Mindoreños from all walks of life ran for one great cause. Thus, as the sun has finally risen making way for another day, the participants then reached the finish line.  I and my Red Cross friends then attended the awarding ceremony and had our own 'gimik' session afterwards.

What's the best part of being a Red Cross volunteer? The free food and the real friends you find along the way.

I’m really, really proud that I am a part of this family.  Through Red Cross, I have gained memorable experiences that I will treasure for the rest of my life.  Being a volunteer has also made me realize that I can be more than just a nurse and a simple Filipino citizen.  I can also be a hero through my own, simple way.

Like me, you can also be a hero.
